Incorporated in 1854 as Uniontown, Anacostia was one of DC's first suburbs and began as a working-class community dominated by Navy Yard employees. The neighborhood continued to grow over the following decades, including with the move of Frederick Douglass into Cedar Hill (now the Frederick Douglass National Historic Site) in 1877. Approximately 550 buildings comprise the historic district, dating from 1854 to about 1930. Most of the early houses in the historic district are free-standing or semi-detached frame structures with front porches and Italianate detail. Some larger, brick row houses and two business streets with early 20th century commercial buildings reflect the early history of the Anacostia community.
